New Hurtles on our Journey

The past few months Baby C and I have been battling a new hurdle for me... Tongue Tie...
Seriously! What's next?   Thankfully I have a very supportive partner and that has made all the difference with all of the hurdles that have come my way.
A few months ago I was getting a little worried about Baby C's weight gain.  I kept looking for the fat rolls that weren't coming.  I looked at pictures of his siblings at his age and noticed Baby K didn't have any rolls then either, which should have been more of a warning since she has a lip tie.  Around this time I also noticed a groin hernia and he seemed to be a bit fussy. We went into the Ped to discover that at 2 months he had only gained 1 lb since birth.

This sent us both into a panic, so much so that her first suggestion was to put him on formula.  She knows me, and knows how I feel about formula.  I also knew that my milk was not the issue.  I called the IBCLC that day and set up an appointment.  Until we could meet I "Triple Fed", this meant feeding one side while pumping the other, swapping sides and then bottle feeding whatever was pumped.   This was a long exhausting process.  Especially with the older 3 running around and attempting to get school work done.  At one point I actually broke my hand pump, and once I had my old electric double pump.. I was attached to the wall for at 15-30minutes every 3-4 hours.
I met the IBCLC at the Pediatric Dentist's office where both confirmed the tie. Baby C was diagnosed with a Stage 3 Posterior Tounge Tie.  He wasn't getting much milk transfer from latching and would spit up much of what he did get.
The Dentist suggested we go see a Speech Therapist for evaluation and therapies for the tie, which was made easier since Lil C already has weekly therapies.  Baby C was also getting weekly weight checks and his weight had been slowly increasing thanks to the triple feeds, but the stress and exhaustion of the feeds did make me consider formula a few times.

Meanwhile we had the appointment about his hernia.  The Surgon didn't really see a tie but assured me that he could do that too when he did the repair.  Good news right? Instead of being awake he could be asleep and we could deal with all the painful stuff at once.
After he came out of the hernia repair the surgon informed me that he had had 2 hernia (both now repaired) and that he couldn't get a Pediatric ENT to come look, but the plastic surgeon looked at it and he didn't think it looked like a tie either, so he didn't clip it.  I almost broke down in tears.  I informed him that his problem wasn't length but that it was to thick.  "Besides he doesn't have any weight gain issue."  I managed not to smack him. But I all but yelled at him that he was only gaining weight due to the triple feeds.   He suggested we see a pediatric ENT or a Speech Therapist.  When I told him we had seen a Pediatric dentist and a Speech Therapist he asked what she said.. and when I curtly replied that she confirmed it... well the look on his face can only be described as "Cat got your tounge"
After Baby C healed from the repair I was hoping he had gotten big enough and strong enough (like Baby K did) that he didn't need all the triple feeds, I started slacking.. and at his weight check, his weight had slowed way down.   So I scheduled the clip with the Pediatric Dentist.
He didn't fuss to much and for the first time he fully drained me and barely spit up.  Plus the spit up was mostly clear.  Since the repair a week ago he has gained 1 lb and gotten back on the growth curve.  His spit-ups aren't every feeding and most of the feeding anymore.  And best of all, he finally has fat rolls.

Happy World Breastfeeding Week Ya'll!

NICU Babyshower

For all the mom's who either know ahead of time that they will have NICU time (high multiples for example) or those, like me, missed/canceled/postponed their own shower due to being on bed
rest or Pre-term labor/delivery. This is going to be a list of great in-the-NICU or post-NICU items for whenever someone asks "what can we do" or "what do you need?" you will have somewhere to send them :)

Extreme Pumping

ACK found this waiting in my Draft pile!!

I recently read a post on babycenter by the author of Kitchen Stewardship, which I LOVE! It was about the strange places she had nursed a few I haven't done, my son was in the NICU during my 6w PP visit and I don't like baseball. But a few I had done and hadn't really thought much of them. Once he came home Nursing-in-public (NIP) wasn't something I thought about doing or not doing, I just did.

I drink from a sippy cup.. Friday Happy

I have had this song stuck in for days!! ... So I figured I would share!
It starts at after the theme song but this was the closest I could find.

yeah.. try and keep that out of your head now!  Yep, you can now hate me :P

Lil' C has gotten pretty good at his Tommee Tippee Sippy cups. I highly suggest these, but not the ones with the harder spouts.. he had problems with those.  Their bottle with a cereal nipple was the only one he could use at all, in the beginning.  He never got very good at any bottles.  I like alot of the TT products.. although they are rather expensive, we just don't buy many.  Sippy cups sure make car trips easier, though!

DIY Nursing Necklace

I have been coveting some nursing necklaces since Lil'C has gotten REALLY REALLY good at removing my glasses.  I have such bad eye sight that I do actually walk into walls/poles/chairs/stairs/etc. without them, and he can remove my glasses in about 10 seconds flat.   That can become really dangerous.

Babywearing

Our first time Babywearing in the NICU or "Rooing"
We babywear  Lil' C anytime we are in public.  We do this for 2 reasons, ease of movement and health reasons.

C-Section. my opinion.

Emergencies happen.
When you are a mom of a NICU baby you more than likely had a C-section.  It usually comes with the territory.  I posted on my Facebook page after Lil'C was born about how I don't get how anyone would choose to go through that.  The pain, the pills, the separation from your child, etc.   I wanted to have a standard un-medicated delivery.. which is about as far as possible from what I got.   The life of my son was worth it.   I still don't understand why anyone would choose major abdominal surgery instead of a natural process.
One "friend's" response was "To save your Vah-Jay Jay!"    I didn't respond to her.. the only thought running through my head was... "really???  Your hubby is failing at his job then... " but I of  course did not tell her that.

Guest Post #3 at Rediscovering Domesticity!

Last week Rediscovering Domesticity ran the second of three guest blogs about "Breastfeeding in the NICU" Rediscovering Domesticity is a blog I have been following for awhile now.
The first one "Breastfeeding in the NICU: an obtainable goal" is our breastfeeding success story. The second one "Breastfeeding in the NICU: Things that help" is about some helpful NICU advice.

Co-Sleeping/Bed sharing, Why we do it.

Our Space
When I was pregnant, I was against the idea of Bed-Sharing.  What if I roll on him?  What if he gets stuck?  What about SIDS.. Etc.. Etc..

Guest Post #2 at Rediscovering Domesticity!

Week before last Rediscovering Domesticity ran the first of three guest blogs about "Breastfeeding in the NICU" Rediscovering Domesticity is a blog I have been following for awhile now.
The first one "Breastfeeding in the NICU: an obtainable goal" is our breastfeeding success story. The second one, up today,  "Breastfeeding in the NICU: Things that help" is about some helpful advice I have gathered in my NICU experience.  So go check it out,  and while your there check out some of her other features, like bloggy basics!

Guest Post at Rediscovering Domesticity!

Rediscovering Domesticity is a blog I have been following for awhile now.  She is such a sweet person and has some great features.  I love reading her Bloggy Basics for one!  Yeah yeah... I started my blog AWHILLLLLEEEEE ago but I haven't put much effort into it until recently...  so I'm still kinna a noob!
She asked me a bit back to do a guest post about Breastfeeding in the NICU.  It started as one.. and morphed into 3!  The first of which is up today! The first one "Breastfeeding in the NICU: an obtainable goal" is our breastfeeding success story.  So go check it out,  and while your there check out some of her other features!

Breastfeeding in the NICU

Nursing in the NICUThe day finally comes when the nurse let's you know "how do you feel like trying to feed today?". Try not jumping up and down while cheering (they don't like it).

Pumping Queen

I hate it too..
When you have a child in the NICU you can feel helpless. Having to ask permission to even touch your child while some stranger changes their diaper.  You have to stand there while someone pokes and prods them. It is a hard thing for anyone to do.. Especially a raw-nerved hormonal, fresh from L and D mom, who has most likely had a c-section to remove her precious sick child from her body.

Breastfeeding & Coth Diapering... but WHY???

ok .. I've gotten this ALOT! from almost EVERYBODY...

Reasons for Breastfeeding EXCLUSIVELY from the American Assn of Pediatrics-
http://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/breastfeeding/Pages/Facts-for-Fathers-About-Breastfeeding.aspx

Reasons for Cloth Diapering... well excluding the environmental stuff.. that's not the main reason. It's a nice plus but really didn't contribute to the overall decision. -
http://www.realdiaperassociation.org/diaperfacts.php

You will notice that all the info is FACTS, not personal opinion. Notice.. CITED!! WOW!

All in all.. I believe it is healthier for my child. If you want to do something different with yours.. then do so.

The other cloth diapering questions.
Don't they Leak?? - their not supposed to. If they do it is a detergent, diaper cream or fit problem.. all of which can be fixed. In general.. they leak about the same amount as disposables or less, but some systems allow you to change the absorbency (pockets, my personal fav) so it can be more absorbent at night.

Don't they stink?? - actually totally breastfed babies... not really. Disposables tend to smell more than cloth (I have heard this from ALL OVER the place, but have no facts because smell is an opinion.

Don't they take alot of work??- again.. not really. Throw 'em in a pail, throw 'em in the washer. wash, dry, fold, diaper, repeat.

What about scraping?? - Did you know it is ILLEGAL to put "poo" in the garbage?? Modern cloth diapers are made so that the poo does not stick, so it can be shaken off. Plus there are these great little diaper liners that can be flushed. And breastfed poo is water soluble, so it goes right in the wash. So if your using disposables & NOT shaking off, scraping off the "poo" your breaking the law.

Surprise, surprise.

Now from this point on.. I'm just going to refer everyone to this post.

Thanks, rant over.

Here is a list of various Cloth Diaper info.  I have yet to try any yet.. (kinna hard when my son isn't due for 3 months..)
There are many diffrent styles of cloth diapers.
Prefolds- the closest available to what Grandma used to use.  It has still gone through a bit of improvements & is the cheapest method. Requires a cover
Fitteds- Similar to prefolds, but there is no "folding" involved. It's shaped like a "regular" diaper & has elastic & velcro or snaps to hold it on. Also Requires a cover.
Pockets- My PERSONAL favorite. ALOT like disposables, but has a pocket to for the absorbent material to go in, so you can personalize it for your child/ time of day.
All-In-Ones- The most like disposables. It's all one piece.  The problem with this is they require more drying time & you can't adjust the absorbency.
All-In-Twos-  A mutint mixture of a pocket & an All-In-One.

Multi Size-  These are the standard.  This means the diaper comes in diffrent sizes, just like clothes.  S, M, L and sometimes XS and XL.
OneSize- I love this as well.  These diapers are made to fit multiple sizes.  they have different settings that allow them to do so.  This is great for families diapering multiple children.  You use the same diaper from Infancy to Potty Training.  The only problem is that very few One Size fit newborns, So another system is needed first.  I'm planing on either using disposables (cuz I know some have already been bought) or a trial package which will allow me to try different styles before we buy the final one-size stash.

Some various pocket one size brands.
SmartiPants-my personal Fav, made in USA https://www.smartipants.com/
Bum Genius- the most popular brand, Target even carries them http://www.bumgenius.com
FuzziBunz- also rather popular http://www.fuzzibunz.com
Flip- http://www.flipdiapers.com/
Happy Heiny's- http://www.happyheinys.com/
Tweedle Bug- http://www.tweedlebugs.com/
Econobum- http://www.econobum.com
Tiny Tush- http://www.tinytush.com/Tiny-Tush-Elite-Pocket-Diapers-One-Size_p_19-713.html
Katydid- http://katydidcloth.com/

They vary in price from $11 up to as much as $26 depending on brand and "organic" or not, but keep in mind.. 12-24 diapers lasts all the way up to Potty training.  The prices also vary from retailer to retailer as well. Personally I hope to end up with Green, Blue and White Diapers... but we'll see...
